Fresh roasted coffee

WHY FRESH ROASTED COFFEE MATTERS

Fresh roasted coffee matters for many reasons. Not only does it greatly enhance the sensory experience of drinking coffee, but it also affects the overall quality and flavor profile of the brew. The process of roasting coffee beans is an art that requires skill, precision, and attention to detail. As a result, fresh roasted coffee offers a unique and superior taste that cannot be replicated by pre-packaged alternatives. When it comes to the world of coffee, freshness reigns supreme, as it elevates the entire coffee-drinking experience to new heights.

WHAT HAPPENS TO COFFEE BEANS OVER TIME?

First, let’s go over what’s happening to your coffee as it ages by using a familiar example: apples. Chances are you’ve bitten into an apple and as you were eating it, a little bit of browning occurred. That’s oxidation, and the same thing that happened there is happening to your coffee beans, especially when pre-ground. Time plays the other role — the things that make coffee "sing" simply break down over time and play less and less a role in the liveliness of your cup.

Oxidation and time dull the flavors of your coffee just like it does any other food (among other factors), and thus fresh roasted coffee is going to give you the longest period of time to get the most vibrant, lively tastes. As a basic rule, we consider a coffee fresh and vibrant until around 4 to 6 weeks off roast, but some coffees can last up to two months.

Fresh coffee matters

First and foremost, the aroma of fresh roasted coffee beans is captivating. As the beans roast, a symphony of rich, complex aromas fills the air, tantalizing the senses and alerting coffee lovers to the delicious brew that awaits. This aroma is a result of the Maillard reaction, a chemical process that occurs during roasting, and it is at its peak when the coffee is fresh. The intoxicating scents of chocolate, caramel, nuts, and bright fruity notes are evidence of the meticulous craftsmanship that has gone into roasting the beans.

3 REASONS FRESH ROASTED COFFEE IS BETTER:

So to recap and expand:

  1. More vibrant flavors
  2. Taste the notes we put on the coffee jar - I tasted the coffee within days of roasting
  3. Get the coffee at its peak potential

Moreover, the flavor profile of fresh roasted coffee is far more dynamic and vibrant compared to its stale counterparts. Coffee beans contain a variety of volatile compounds that contribute to their taste. These compounds deteriorate over time, leading to a noticeable decline in flavor. When coffee is freshly roasted, these compounds are preserved, resulting in a more nuanced and well-rounded taste.

In addition, the freshness of the roast directly affects the brewing process. Freshly roasted coffee boasts greater soluble content, ensuring that flavors are fully extracted during brewing. As a result, each sip is more balanced, full-bodied, and satisfying.

By choosing fresh roasted coffee, we embrace the essence of what makes coffee truly remarkable.

5 TIPS FOR HAVING THE FRESHEST, TASTIEST COFFEE

1. BUY WHOLE BEAN

  • Invest in high-quality coffee beans. The journey towards a perfect cup of coffee starts with choosing the right beans. Opt for beans that have been recently roasted and are of a single origin from reputable sources. Freshly roasted beans are essential as they retain more of their natural flavors and oils, resulting in a richer, more vibrant taste.

2. GRIND FRESH

  • Grind your coffee just before brewing. By grinding your coffee just before brewing, you ensure that the grounds are as fresh as possible.
  • Consider investing in a burr grinder, as it provides a consistent grind size and does not heat the beans excessively during the process, which could affect the flavor.

  • We recommend the Fellow Opus or Baratza Encore

3. WATER TEMPERATURE

  • Temperature plays a crucial role in extracting the optimal flavors from coffee. The ideal temperature for brewing coffee is between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit (90-96 degrees Celsius).

  • Avoid using boiling water directly, as it can scorch the coffee and result in a bitter taste.

4. WATER QUALITY

  • Coffee is primarily composed of water, so the quality of the water you use significantly impacts the taste. Avoid using tap water if it is heavily chlorinated or has an unpleasant smell, as it will negatively affect the flavor.

  • Utilize filtered water or spring water to brew the coffee.

5. USE A STORAGE FOR YOUR COFFEE BEANS

  • Store your coffee beans or grounds properly. Browndog Coffee jar does the job extremely well so not need to worry about that.
  • Exposure to air, light, heat, and moisture can rapidly degrade the quality of coffee.

By following these five tips, coffee enthusiasts can savor a delightful, aromatic cup of coffee, elevating their caffeine ritual to new heights of satisfaction.
